History Of RTF

RTFM - An old Unix Sys Admin saying that means Read The F#&$^ing Manual or Read The F#&$^ing Manpage. A Manpage or the command of MAN will allow a Unix/Linux user to look up the documentation of a particular command. I.E. man cp will give you all the information you need to use the Copy (cp) command including all the additional switches -options. 9 times out of 10, a Unix/Linux question about a command could have been answered by doing a simple man on the operation system. Thus, out of frustration, a Sys Admin replied to a stupid question and RTFM was born.

Later on, it evolved into RTFA aka Read The F#&$^ing Article. This refers to a person who makes a comment on an article or topic without actually reading it. The first time I saw RTFA used was on Slashdot, but it has since grown.

On several of the forums I frequent, people often get frustrated with a persons lack of effort in trying to search for the answer. Often, they point them to Google or even go as far as doing the search and linking it for the lazy person.

From this, we get RTFG or Read The F#&$^ing Google. It's a play on words, but I think it will catch on if we put it out there. It could become a very simple reply to some idiots post.

So, RTFG.net is born..... Now, let's see where it goes. Feel free to link this site to the bottom of your sig on other sites or even to use it as a simple answer to a stupid question.
